    A day off and a trip to New Hope

    June 21st, 2007 (Last modified: 6/29/2007 @ 6:41 am UTC)

    I had off yesterday and so we took a ride to New Hope, PA. I would describe New Hope as an artsy community next to the Delaware River. It is not too far from Trenton, NJ. There are a lot of shops with both newly made items / art and a lot of old items. There are also a lot of restaurants and a theater for shows.

    We did a lot of walking and my legs are feeling the muscle strain today. We ate lunch when we first arrived. Then we stopped in what seems like every shop.

    We got some dinner and took it to my Mom’s house. She hasn’t been feeling well for a while. She ate a little and we stayed a short time. It was nice.

    RSS – a potential use

    June 18th, 2007

    I just found this article on the odiogo blog. I think it explains RSS extremely well, at least for me.

    I just set up odiogo on this blog to increase the accessibility to the content. Basically odiogo is a service that you subscribe to so that you can provide your content in audio format. Great idea! You subscribe and then you are sent a feed code to input into the plugin that you install in WP. Now, your content is available to those who are visually impaired.

    However, thinking as I usually do, I tried to merge this technique with the kromofons project that I have been interested in. Why not take the feed and translate the letters to their color counterparts and then make that a color-version of the feed you can subscribe to. I think this sound intriguing and will pursue this.

    CSS and bullets

    June 18th, 2007

    I learned something on Saturday that I was having trouble doing on my blog. I have a bunch of recipes and wanted to add a special bullet image to the list of ingredients. My friend bj referred me to Laura Bowers site to see how she added an image in front of the header title. I checked it out out and figured out what I had to do in my stylesheet.

    I created a class called “recipes” for my posts. The theme I am using calls this “entry”. Yours may be called “post”. I added the following to my stylesheet:

    .entry .recipes ul li {
        background:#fff url(./images/bullet.gif) no-repeat;
        list-style: none;
        padding:3px;
        padding-left:20px;
    }

    So, I am in the process of editing my recipe posts to add a div called recipes around the entire post. It works very well. Now i will look for an icon to use.
    Thanks for your help, bj.

    Freak out

    June 18th, 2007

    My oldest daughter and my wife are way more alike than either of them would like to think. They both freak out at the simplest thing especially when they cannot find something and are running out the door to get to work or to an appointment. It would seem to me that if they were more organized, they wouldn’t have this problem.

    So, my daughter asks me:

    Do you know where my vest is? I can’t find it any where.

    I go downstairs and find her rifling through all the folded clothes. My wife does this, too, in looking for things. But who folded the clothes – me.

    I tell her:

    What you are looking for would not be there. It is probably hung up in the laundry room.

    I go in there and push aside some hung clothes and see them. She says:

    What are they doing back there?

    Grabs them and blows out of the house.

    So, where did we go wrong? Let’s analyze. Either she or I hung up the wet clothes a while ago to let them dry. This was good. Subsequent loads of laundry have been done over the past week. Other things have been hung to dry and were positioned in front of them.

    If she would have put her clothes away when they should have been, there would not be a problem. But she doesn’t always do that. She does do it much more frequently than my wife.

    So, please think my darling daughter. When you move away and go to grad school and have a roommate (or not), you will make you life much easier if you get better organized.

    Moms and Dads

    June 17th, 2007 (Last modified: 6/19/2007 @ 6:56 am UTC)

    Today is Father’s Day. I hope every father in the world has a great day! I’m sitting here sipping a glass of iced coffee after my special breakfast. My wife made a batch of whole wheat / sunflower pancakes. I should say she made the batter and I cooked the pancakes as I always do. It seems I have a talent for making them not stick to the griddle. Alicia and I ate our pancakes with peaches while my wife went to church and my other daughter slept.

    I opened Alicia’s present which was a sign she made at school saying “The Wursters”. I’ll hang it outside under our street address. It was very nice. Maria got me underwear, which I did need.

    I was out last night kind of as a present to myself. I was at the RefreshDelVal meeting in Skippack, PA. It was at the Village Coffeehaus. I was a nice place and they had live music. They also have wi-fi access which we need for our computers that we bring. I had a couple of iced coffees and some pastry. They are still renovating the place but it was a fun place to be in. After a while we got hungry and had some pizza at another local place. It was good and we had a great time talking and sharing stories.

    I got to the meeting place early and had a chance to walk around the town. It was quaint like New Hope, PA, a popular tourist site in our area. I went into the shops that were still open. And I found some things in one shop Amelia’s that I bought for my Mom since her birthday is on Wednesday and we will be visiting he today.

    It’s been many years since my father was alive (and also my wife’s father). They both died within a week of each other about 20 years ago.

    Happy Father’s day, Dads.
