This is a new class I have started teaching. I will be learning along with you and hope that this will provide you with some useful resource information about Web Design. I hope you will get out of it what you need. I am anxious to hear you comments about the class as this is the first time I am teaching such a class. Your comments and suggestions will definitely help me make it better.
One of the things I've realized is that you need a step-by-step process of what you need to do to set up your own web site. So, here is a start and we'll modify it along the way.
- Choose a domain name for your web site and register it.
- Choose a host for your web site. Evaluate the potential providers with what is important to you.
- Choose a tool with which to create your web site.
- Design your web site.
- Build your web site locally on your computer before publishing it live on the internet.
- Test your web site.
- Publish your web site to your host.
There are many places where one can learn about web design and web page development. My class is a start. I just found out about this online site. A friend has used it for Dreamweaver and recommends it highly. If you do register for any courses, please reference Jesse Kelly, kelly@creativearts.com, so he gets the $5 discount for each on his future courses.
I've also found a how to build a web site. It seems to have a lot of information about the steps I've listed above.
I hope that going through how to use WordPress was beneficial to you. It's unfortunate that there are no tools on the school district computers for us to experiment with. SSD only has Microsoft Frontpage while WSSD only has Dreamweaver. I don't know either of these tools at all. One of my goals is to expose you to some tools that are available for building web pages. In this way, you can find the ones that suite your needs.
I plan to investigate how to put some tools on a USB flash drive, so that I can bring them to class for each student to use. I have the instructions. Now I need to test.
A problem that I recently ran into was "exceeding my bandwidth" with my web host. This is something that you need to consider when selecting a web host.
